You may not be aware of this, but Facebook has subtly advertised through you and your friends’ recommendations.

Facebook is clever enough to realise that the strongest promotion that a brand can have is recommendations from families and friends. However, the strategy employed by Facebook has gone the wrong way. At least that’s what The Checkout implied on their latest show, as the star of the show, Kristen Drysdale said:

“You trust your friends, the fact is 80% of people trust recommendations from friends and family – that’s more than any other service. The company that turned friendship into a commodity is making millions by selling that trust.”

The show also cited Facebook’s Terms and Conditions, which stated that you permit a business or other entity to pay them to display your name and/or profile picture with your content or information, without any compensation to you. However, some problems ensue, like what if we don’t really “like” a Page? What if we like a Page because we just want to win the competition? What if we liked a Page, for instance, four years ago and the recommendation appeared to our friends’ timeline a few minutes ago?
