Startups are often overwhelmed with time management. However, no matter how busy you are, putting aside 30 minutes every day for SEO can create a meaningful impact on your website’s traffic and lead generation abilities.

In order to get started on the right foot, it’s important to select a good keyword and theme. Before you can optimise your website for any keywords, you need to find out how your future prospects are searching for your products or services. The quickest way to get a snapshot in search terms and popularity is by checking out the competition.

One of the easiest tool for keyword researching is Google Keyword Planner. It is free and very easy to use. Once you open the keyword tool, select “search for new keyword and ad group ideas.”

1-search-box-for-keywords

Simply enter the URL of one of your competitors and you will get a list of what keywords Google thinks their website is about. Pick just one keyword that has “low” competition and gets a reasonable amount of searches. The number of searches needed to make a keyword worthwhile depends on what products or services you offer. If your profit per conversion is $2, you will need a much higher search volume than if it is $20K per conversion.

Once you find an acceptable term, take the low competition keyword that you found, enter it into the keyword planner by selecting “modify search” above the keyword information.

2-keyword-suggestions

Delete the URL of the competitor from the “landing page” box and enter the low competition keyword you found in the last step into the “your product or service” box, then click get ideas.

3-search-modification

You will then be provided with a list of terms Google believes is relevant to the term you entered. Including them is more important now than in the past since Google has released updates that help its algorithm determine the overall topic of a page. So, if you are still creating pages for every keyword, you need to stop now. Instead, you should have a page themed around the relevant topic which should include the appropriate keywords.

As with the original search, you will be given a list of terms related to the keyword you entered as well as the search volume and competition. On the example below, this method returned several low competition terms that have search volume.

4-keyword-by-relevance

Your particular product or service offerings would determine which of the terms you choose to include.

After a few trial and error process, you will be able to complete the process outlined above. That means you could create a list of topics and keywords for an entire months’ worth of blog posts in just 30 minutes or less.
