You can now visit Carnegie Hall or Theatro Municipal de São Paulo without leaving your couch.

Now users can use Google Street View as part of the online exhibition. This feature lets art lovers get front row (or often even closer) for a range of musical and dramatic performances virtually. Recently, Google Cultural Institute has launched a new virtual exhibition tool 360-degree viewing experiences, which lets you watch productions by the Paris Opera Ballet or Royal Shakespeare Company from any angle, or step on stage at Carnegie Hall to get amongst the Philadelphia Orchestra.

“The new Performing Arts exhibition gives you a view that’s even closer than a front-row seat in the house,” Institute director Amit Sood said in a blog post. “With 360-degree performance recordings, you can choose a dancer’s-eye view of the crowd, or look down from the stage into the orchestra pit.”

The exhibition is presented in alliance with more than 60 performing arts organisations.

Beyond the on-stage experiences, viewers can also peer behind the curtain and go backstage.

“At the world’s leading performing arts venues — like Carnegie Hall, the Berliner Philharmonie, the Bolshoi Theatre — artists, costume designers, musicians, stage crews and many more all come together to create the perfect moment on stage,” Sood said. “And now you can join them.”

Viewers can visit the wig workshop at the opera house in Brussels or see the historical arches beneath the stage of the Fundacao Theatro Municipal in Sao Paolo. With Google Street View, you can see backstage scenes as well as other views from various parts of the venue.
