Tesla has officially launched its first electric car in Australia.

The automobile company has achieved worldwide recognition after producing the Tesla Roadster between 2008 and 2012, the first fully electric sports car, before moving on to the Tesla Model S, X, 3 and the Model D. With these innovative models, Tesla is hoping to compete the Australian car market with the launch of the Model S, the first pure electric vehicle launch in Australia.

You can charge it up overnight using a plug in your garage and then you are ready to take the key-less EV on the road. After one hour of charging, it can drive 55 kilometres, depending on the power source. It puts hybrid cars to shame and leaves the term “novelty” in the dust with a speed of 0 to 100 in 3.4 seconds and 500 kilometres plus per charge.

Tesla’s user experience technology bumps the vehicle up a notch. It comes with a massive 17-inch screen, an app to track your stats, a touch screen controlled sunroof, auto-closing handles and mirrors, along with voice-controlled navigation, calling and tracks. And that is just the beginning.

Next year, Tesla will release the charging systems between Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney to make long-distance travel less worrisome. These superchargers will have you back on the road in 20 minutes. By 2016, the charge network will stretch up the east coast of Australia in an attempt to prompt the government and other car companies to also consider infrastructure implementation to allow the EV industry to take off in Australia.

Saving on petrol and driving in this much style will set you back a small fortune with the high performance model (P85D) ringing in at a starting price of A$133,500.
