Welcome to our review of Australia’s Social Media Statistics in June 2013. Here is a list of social media with big number of active users:

1. Facebook – 12,200,000 Australian users/accounts (up approximately 665,460 accounts).
2. YouTube – 11,250,000 UAVs (steady)
3. WordPress.com – 3,200,000 (steady)
4. Blogspot – 2,950,000 (up 50,000)
5. LinkedIn – 2,900,000 (steady)
6. Tumblr – 2,750,000 (down 150,000)
7. Twitter – 2,167,849 Active Australian Users
8. Instagram – 1,083,924 Active Australian Users
9. Flickr – 870,000 (down 10,000)
10. TripAdvisor – 825,000 (up 15,000)
11. Pinterest – 570,000 (down 50,000)
12. MySpace – 270,000 (down 20,000)
13. Yelp – 210,000 (d0wn 10,000)
14. Reddit – 185,000 (steady)
15. Google Plus – approximately 100,000 (my estimation *revised*)
16. StumbleUpon – 90,000 (down 5,000)

Few major points:

  • Facebook has had a big number of users this month. This is either Facebook tweaking their ads tool, or a large number of new users signing up. This could be the yearly growth spurt you see from new users 13 years of age signing up – not in one month, but Facebook refreshing their reporting tools to possible include signups over several months.
  • There has been a slight dip in users this month for Tumblr. Does this have anything to do with the acquisition by Yahoo?
  • The main blog networks and LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube dominate the other top social networks accessed.
  • Smaller second tier social networks have trouble maintaining regular monthly users over a longer period of time.
